One of the many enduring legacies of the late master drum teacher Alan Dawson, the Rudimental Ritual is an exceptionally well-crafted exercise that explores the rudiments (and variations) in various phrases and rhythmic contexts. This class will provide an overview of its different sections, demonstrations of specific patterns, discussion of technical challenges, and guidance towards the eventual goal of learning and memorizing the full Ritual.

In the modern musical environment, software-based music is no longer confined by the bounds of pop, dance, and experimental genres—it is increasingly becoming a standard tool for all kinds of musicians who want to expand their sonic palette, and enhance (rather than replace) the possibilities of their acoustic instruments. In this workshop, Jon Arkin demonstrates & discusses electro-acoustic concepts for the improvising musician, including an introduction to Pure Data (an open source graphical programming language designed for musicians), and an overview of how to keep musical usability as the focus of one’s venture into the ever-expanding world of music technology. The vast majority of music students of every level experience a sense of frustration with their progress, whether feeling their improvement plateau; feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work needed to advance; or feeling guilty for not having more time/motivation to devote to practice. While some students find ways to channel this frustration to fuel their work ethic, many others will lapse in their practice or quit entirely. This workshop, open to all instruments and levels, will explore ways of reinforcing a healthy, effective mindset in one’s practice. In learning to recognize the most common emotional traps (complacency on one side, futility on the other) and understanding the importance of seeing the larger picture of your current level and the direction you’re headed, you can find the equilibrium that provides the freedom to work and play at music without the distractions of ego and ambition.

What is a “modern” jazz drummer? This term has constantly shifted throughout the various eras of jazz’s evolution, which inevitably leads to today’s “modern” drummers becoming the “classic” drummers of tomorrow. This cycle is a direct reflection of the nature of jazz as a revolutionary art form, which adds to the unbreakable connection between the music’s history and the cutting edge of innovation at every stage.
When studying the lineage of jazz’s most influential drummers over time, with the aforementioned perspective as context, one begins to discover a breakdown of dichotomies that have attempted to classify these drummers at any given moment: old versus new, in versus out, correct versus incorrect, superior versus inferior, hip versus stale, and countless other assumptions that can form a limited understanding of jazz’s aesthetic. Without these limitations to obscure our view, we can see the “postmodern” in drummers of every era, and find equal inspiration, from the early pioneers of the instrument’s language to those who are currently reinventing it.
This class will provide a broad study of jazz drummers (from the center to the fringes of jazz’s mainstream) through the study of audio and video examples, with discussion of many aspects of their approaches. While the focus will be on the larger musical perspective, technical considerations will inevitably become a component of the conversation, and offer inspiration for reinventing one’s own study and practice. Open to drummers of any level of experience.

This rhythm study class for all instruments introduces a progression of new areas, including applied polyrhythms, polymeter, displacement, odd/compound time signatures, metric modulation, stacked/nested rhythms, and more. Musicians use these advanced tools to navigate rhythmically complex music and enhance their sense of rhythm, allowing for greater rhythmic freedom in all playing areas.

This class will include an overview of basic polyrhythmic concepts and explore many drum set applications, with written and listening examples. If you play the drum set, you’re already working with polyrhythms (whether you realize it or not!). The dedicated study of applied polyrhythms around the kit is a powerful way to develop independence, coordination, comfort, and rhythmic fluency.
