Jon Arkin Online Class: The Musical Drummer

Wednesdays 6 – 7:30pm
7/8 – 8/12 (6 weeks)

This class will focus on developing the drummer’s sense of musicality – the essential (and often lacking) element of playing which can take your drumming beyond patterns and exercises and bring it to life. Students will explore a wide variety of concepts, including time feel, meaningful interaction, melodic soloing, dynamic balance, and finding one’s individual sound. Through listening, transcribing, playing & discussion, the class will bring awareness to that most fundamental component of music: The joy of creation!

Jon Arkin Online Class: Rudiments & Stick Technique

Wednesdays 6:30 – 8pm
4/8 – 6/3 (9 weeks)

A hands-on class for drummers who would like to refine their stick technique & control for drum set playing. Students will learn & explore basic rudiments, variations, combinations, and exercises which apply these patterns to musical phrases. The study of rudimental drumming also provides an excellent window into the finer aspects of technique, including grip angles, finger/wrist/arm roles, and Moeller-based movement.

Jon Arkin Class: Intermediate Jazz Drumming

Wednesdays 6:30 – 8pm
1/8 – 3/11 (10 weeks)

For drummers with some familiarity with jazz and associated styles, this class will provide insights into how to break through to the next level. With a deeper understanding of groove, dynamics, phrasing, melody, interaction, and musical context, one can find greater meaning in their playing. The class will also highlight a narrow subset of exercises which are especially powerful tools for jazz drummers, covering stick/brush technique, full drum set technique, and rhythmic ear training.

Jon Arkin Class: Jazz Drumming

Wednesdays 6:30 – 8pm
9/25 – 12/4 (10 weeks, no class 11/27)

A hands-on course covering essential skills for jazz drum set playing. Topics covered include time and feel, jazz-specific technique, idiomatic grooves, brush playing, limb independence exercises, soloing, song forms, and the drummer’s role within a jazz group. In addition to written exercises, the class will study listening examples featuring many of the pioneers of jazz drumming. Recommended for all drummers interested in developing and refining the skills necessary to become a well-rounded and in-demand jazz drummer. Prerequisites: functional drumset technique.
