JA's classes at the Berkeley Jazzschool:

The Musical Drummer

This class focuses on developing the drummer’s sense of musicality — the essential (and often lacking) element of playing which can take your drumming beyond patterns and exercises and bring it to life. Students explore a wide variety of concepts, including time feel, meaningful interaction, melodic soloing, dynamic balance, and finding one’s individual sound. Through listening, transcribing, playing and discussion, the class brings awareness to that most fundamental component of music: the joy of creation!

Saturdays 11:45am – 1:15pm

Creative Drum Set Technique (new class!)

Faced with an ever-growing mountain of technique/method books, it’s easy for drum students to feel overwhelmed. This class takes a different approach to the classic themes of drum technique, by focusing on only a few of the most versatile aspects, and exploring the astonishing wealth of expressive possibilities that they contain. Students learn new ways of applying common rudiments and simple patterns to standard melodic phrases, and take the essential step of connecting their technique with musical expression.

Saturdays 1:30pm – 3pm

Fall session begins September 25th, for registration info visit the Jazzschool's website.
